India remained for long as a nation with 100 crore people and 1 medal in each Olympics (1996 Atlanta till 2008 Beijing).
Indian Olympic Medals
It was Leander Peas, Karnam Malewshari and R.S. Rathore who made sure that India will return home with at-least one medal in 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympics. 2008 Beijing Olympics saw a new India, bagging 3 medals including a gold by Abhinav Bindra. Olympics Events normally do not generate as much interest in majority Indians as it would be with a Cricket match, and that is one of the reasons why in India, Olympics or any other sports or games are not thriving well. Apart from people’s support, support from Government is also nominal. All Indian athletes know this attitude very well, and now they are mentally prepared to fight with this indifference. With the London Olympics 2012 just one day away, what are the Indian hopes?
Why India has more Olympic medal hopes this year?
India does have more hopes this year. Our strength is in our spirited youth side, who are the new faces of emerging India. Any comments on Indian medal hopes in London Olympics 2012? Who do you consider among potential medal winners? And any predictions about the number of gold, silver or bronze for India (and which category)? And what can be done to improve our performance in sports and games other than cricket? Comments appreciated.
